What’s In My Swim Bag

We officially wrapped up two weeks of swim lessons with the boys! 🎉 If you haven’t already, make sure to check out this post where I share more about the swim program we chose and a few helpful tips for navigating toddler swim lessons.

Today, I wanted to dive deeper into our swim bag essentials—because trust me, we learned a few things along the way.

The Right Bag Makes All the Difference

The first thing I realized? I needed a big, sturdy bag to fit all the things—especially two toddler-sized towels. I went with a classic Lands’ End canvas tote, and it was perfect. As a child of the '80s, there’s something nostalgic about those canvas totes. You don’t appreciate them as a kid, but they hit differently when you’re packing them for your own little ones.

We went with the monogrammed option (because why not), and it held up beautifully. Bonus: Lands’ End is currently offering 50% off sitewide—definitely worth checking out!

Stay Organized with Zip Bags

I found some great zip bags on Amazon that doubled as wet bags for swimsuits or other small items. They made organizing the tote so much easier. I also use them for rotating toys in and out of the diaper bag. A total win for function and flexibility.

Don’t Forget Diapers and Wipes

I packed:

  • Extra swim diapers

  • Regular diapers

  • Wipes

  • Disposable diaper bags (a must—I forgot them the first day and ended up awkwardly carrying dirty diapers around looking for a trash can 😬)

Trust me, the diaper bags are worth throwing in.

Sun Protection Must-Haves

While our boys aren’t big fans of hats or sunglasses yet, I still pack them to encourage sun-safe habits. I stick with budget-friendly options, because let’s be honest—toddlers are going to lose or break things. These are a fun option!

We’re also big fans of rash guards with a high neckline, which cut down on the amount of sunscreen needed. I pair those with easy-on toddler water shoes—a lifesaver when wrangling two littles out the door. Again, I go for affordable options since they outgrow them so quickly.

Favorite Sunscreens

We’ve tried a few, but here’s what I keep in the swim bag:

  • A mineral sunscreen that goes on smoothly and doesn’t leave white streaks

  • A sunscreen stick—way easier for quick application for the face (and less pushback from the boys!)

The One Thing That Helps Us Avoid Meltdowns (mostly)

If I had to pick one item that consistently saves us from post-swim meltdowns, it’s a favorite snack or treat. After swimming, toddlers are usually tired, hungry, and a little overstimulated—which is basically the meltdown trifecta.

Having a go-to snack packed and ready (think applesauce pouch, granola bar, or a special post-swim treat) makes the transition from pool to car so much smoother. I’ve even made it part of our routine: “First we dry off, then we snack.” It gives them something to look forward to and helps their little bodies regulate after all that activity.

Pro tip: Keep a small, non-messy snack in a separate waterproof pouch, so you’re not digging through wet towels to find it when emotions are running high.

The Extras That Made a Big Difference

  • Dry change of clothes – Especially helpful if you're not heading straight home

  • Towels – One for each kid (and maybe a backup!)

  • Water bottles – Hydration is key post-pool

If you’re prepping for toddler swim lessons or building your summer pool routine, I hope this list helps take some of the guesswork out of what to bring. Parenting is all about learning as you go—and packing a swim bag is no different!
